Kamla rededicates herself and PP to serving the people; praises Jack for his "outstanding contribution"

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar celebrated her birthday with her constituents and other supporters Monday night at a political meeting at Penal Junction in her Siparia constituency.

Describing her large audience and others joining in on radio, television and the Internet as her "extended family" she recommitted herself to good governance and service

"I assure you that as we enter the final two years of our mandate that you handed us, we would continue to work for you … our mantra of service remains at the forefront of all that we do," she said.

She also announced that former National Security Minister Jack Warner had resigned as chairman of the United National Congress.

"Today Mr Warner tendered his resignation as Chairman of the UNC and it has been accepted. The National Executive will now consider this vacancy and the position will be filled according to the rules - so the work of the party continues uninterrupted," the UNC leader said.

She also praised her former cabinet member for his dedication and service to the government and the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

"Mr. Warner’s resignation from the Cabinet comes with a degree of regret as he was a highly industrious and productive member of the Government having served with distinction in the Ministries of Works and National Security.

"Mr Warner's recent efforts in the fight against crime have begun to reap reward and have set the tone towards restoring the constitutionally entrenched right to safety and security of the person and property.

"His outstanding contribution to country and government and service to people and community shall remain a legacy of his tenure as a Cabinet Minister and MP.

"Mr. Warner’s resignation would allow for the government of Trinidad and Tobago to continue apace with its developmental objectives without distraction and would further permit him time and space to adequately treat with the matters raised.

"I wish to thank Mr. Warner for his years of service to Trinidad and Tobago. That Mr. Warner has voluntarily tendered his resignation should be credited to his desire to ensure that the public’s confidence in the government and system of governance are kept intact and to further guarantee that the image and reputation of the Government and people are not subject to any further adverse publicity.

"In the end we did what we had to do because we did not want this issue to continue to be a distraction for the work we have to do. Neither did Mr. Warner."

She pledged that her government's work would continue under the new National Security Minister.

"I want to tell you tonight …nobody would distract your government … Nobody will distract me from the work we have to do... WE WILL CONTINUE our work UNINTERRUPTED.

"Senator Emmanuel George would lead the charge to continue the fight against crime … nothing will stop us … certainly not Keith Rowley and his band of obstructionists," Persad-Bissessar said.

She had a message for the Opposition Leader. "Rowley will beat his chest and boast that he has won a big victory. He has already called this damage control. Well he can call it whatever he wants, we know that it is part of the good governance we promised you.

"And I have a message for you Mr. Rowley – YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET. YOU BETTER WATCH OUT AND STOP PROTECTING CRIMINALS!"
