UWI says no contract awarded yet for South campus

The University of the West Indies (UWI) confirmed on Wednesday that no contract has been awarded yet for the construction of the new UWI South Campus at Penal/Debe.

In a statement, the university said the procurement process has not been completed, adding that it expects that all related negotiations will be completed shortly.

Media reports have said the contract has been awarded to the foreign firm, China Jiangsu International.

Government Senator and leader of the Movement for Social Justice leader David Abdulah called it a "worrying sign" and urged the government to make greater use of local contractors.

A similar call has been made by Afra Raymond, the President of the Joint Consultative Council for the Construction Industry, who said he is concerned about the use of foreign contractors by Government.

UWI explained that there is a rigorous prequalification exercise through public advertising in the local and foreign media to ensure a fair and transparent bidding process.

It said that is in keeping with the University’s mandatory and independent procurement guidelines and international best practice.

UWI said it is extremely pleased with the progress made so far on the process implemented over the past 12 months for the design, procurement and construction of the new UWI south Campus.

The process commenced with the hiring of an experienced project management firm, extensive stakeholder consultation and preparation of schematic design intent and criteria in keeping with the design-build project execution model.
